Cet article apporte un nouveau regard sur l\u2019\u00e9criture de l\u2019histoire naturelle, culturelle, mat\u00e9rielle et visuelle des objets v\u00e9g\u00e9taux \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque moderne dans le cadre du \u00ab Nouveau Monde \u00bb. Pour cela, nous puisons nos exemples dans les publications des journaux des voyages aux Cara\u00efbes \u00e9crits par Jean-Baptiste Labat entre le XVIIe et le XVIIIe si\u00e8cle en analysant le discours produit par le colon europ\u00e9en sur de tels objets. Nous \u00e9tudions ainsi les plantes d\u2019une part, traces souvent imperceptibles, t\u00e9moins muets de l\u2019histoire, et les personnes, d\u2019autre part, ex\u00e9cutant les t\u00e2ches difficiles des plantations; autant d\u2019indices des usages et des pratiques des soci\u00e9t\u00e9s autochtones et des esclaves amen\u00e9s par les colons europ\u00e9ens sur des objets \u00ab non occidentaux \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

English : Summary
<\/em><\/strong>This article offers a new methodological approach to the writing of natural, cultural, material, and visual histories of plants in early-modern period. For this, we draw on examples from the published journals of Jean-Baptiste Labat regarding his exploration of Caribbean islands and territories in the seventeenth century and eighteenth centuries. On the one hand, our goal is to study plants as objects and their invisible traces as silent witnesses of history. On the other hand, we examine the harsh working conditions on plantations, and the practices of colonists, indigenous Americans and slaves dealing with plants as materials of knowledge in the form of drugs \/ remedies, food, artisanal and ethnographic objects. This \u201cwork-in-progress\u201d research and methodological approach aim at looking anew at the sources, decentering our perception, considering the materiality of these \u201cnon-Western\u201d objects, and analyzing the discourse produced by the European colonists concerning such objects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
